I can’t predict how the future will really turn out but I’d like to make it to at least one music festival this year since I will most likely miss all others. This year is the 10th year anniversary of Iceland Airwaves. I was there previously in 2004.

First acts have been announced:

“First off we have brazilian dance-rockers CSS, who are releasing their second album in the summer following their hugely succesful self titled debut of 2006. Fresh from supporting the The Kills on tour this spring, Those New Puritans (UK), will not disapoint those who like nothing better than to ruin the new Hedi Slimane suit on a dancefloor, and their signed to Domino which has to be our second favourite label here at Airwaves HQ. Our favorite label has to be Moshi Moshi though, and from them we have Florence and the Machine (UK) one of the rockets being prepared for launch from NME missile platform, into the stratosphere of cool’n’hip.

Those usually not on the rocket and dancefloor tip will appreciate the more refined tones of Final Fantasy (CA), or the beautifully melancholic pop of Stars Like Fleas (US). Sophisticated and yet something you can wiggle your tail to; Brooklyn band Dirty Projectors ooze confidence and craftmanship in their live performance.

Never known to ignore out Nordic brethren, Planningtorock (DE), Therese Aune (NO), Familjen (SE) will charm and enchant us with each of their versions of electronically based underground pop.

Some might be thinking; “where are all the guitars?” Fear not, White Lies (UK) might well be the next Interpol. Making the trek over the North-Atlantic from Canada are The Miracle Fortress and the Wolf Parade’s new project The Handsome Furs. The Young Knives (UK) might be one of the young guns of the indie scene according to the UK music press.

Going back to the electronic side off things, we have electro pop kings Junior Boys from Canada, club heroes Simian Mobile Disco. From Australia we have Pnau, who will certainly one the stars of 2008. Blog stars Crystal Castles are another band from Canada who’ll most certainly put on a explosive show as will electro girl duo Robots In Disguise (UK). Looking at these Jerry Bouthier (UK), Boom Box and Kitsune resident dj will have his work cut out, keeping the energy levels at 11.

But as always its probably the icelandic that will steal the show and blow the roofs of the venues.The loveable, lewd and not always so lucid local acts that have been confirmed are GusGus, Skakkamannage, Seabear, Retro Stefson, Dikta, Hjaltalín, Reykjavik, FM Belfast, Sprengjuhöllin, Dr.Spock, Dýrðin, Borko, Steed Lord, Glutus Maximus, Ghostigital. With more acts to be confirmed in the next weeks the 10th Airwaves promises to be the most action-packed and fun festival yet.

(i think it’s more amazing that people don’tt get more worked up that someone is on a red carpet asking people “who are you wearing?” while celebraties play dress up when Bjork comes through and makes fun of the whole event/establishment while wearing a swan dress and laying eggs on the red carpet THAT’S PUNK! The Killers isn’t punk. )

Hitchhiking in Alaska…

So what happened was about 1 am I ran into my buddy Joe that works here and he gave me a beer. This was the second night that he had given me one so I pointed out to him that I’d be willing to contribute next time someone went to town to get some. He said they’d probably go tomorrow or if I wanted we could go to this old broad’s house they call Granmma. She lives in her liquor store and will wake up 24 hours to sell you liquor. However the store was about a 40 minute drive. We didn’t have a car so we decided we were going to walk the whole way. He doesn’t have to be at work until Wednesday and I don’t until Monday night. So we took off into the night with the 12 beers Joe had left and cameras, no water. Two or three miles out we started hitchhiking. First car zoomed past us. The second car was going the wrong way but we thought we’d try it anyway just to go somewhere. They passed us by and then U-turned and came back and picked us up. It was a couple of the Native kids that went to high school. We paid them for gas and they took us about 80 miles total to Grammas. The legends were true. She’s a crazy old bat that lives in a cave.. a liquor cave and you ring her door bell and she’ll come out and open her liquor store for you. But if you bullshit around too long she gets crabby and starts yelling at you that she wants to go back to bed so get your shit and get out. I love Granmma. Anyway, on the way back I saw my first live bear out here which was in the middle of the road. I no longer want to encounter a bear in the wilderness as I saw the enormity of the beast and the speed at which it took off out of the road into the woods was amazing. They dropped us off back at the road leading into the lodge and we hiked the trail back up to the lodge. Took some really cool pictures as it was like a 3:30 am dawn. Though I was prepared for a 2 day journey, it was 2-1/2 hours of the most exciting time I’ve had since I’ve been up here. The story keeps going till about 7 am but this is where I stop telling it for now. I’m pretty sure the rest of the story might result in me getting in a little bit of trouble here to come. I’m going to try and lay low the rest of the day and keep rolling back and forth in bed till this hangover goes away.

oh yeah.. hitching hiking is stupid.. don’t do it!
